While the previous installments in the reboot series have done well in China, the late release for this film likely means its box office potential has already been somewhat eroded.
21st Century Fox’s sci-fi epic ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ has scored a release date for September 15 in China, two months later than its North American outing.
In an announcement Tuesday, IMAX says the third installment in the Planet of the Apes reboot series will debut in 3D in around 430 of their cinemas across China. The company has also unveiled a new official poster in the style of an ancient Chinese ink painting.
While the previous installments in the reboot series have done well in China, the late release for this film likely means its box office potential has already been somewhat eroded.
The film has so far grossed over $313 million around the globe and received critical praise. Directed by Matt Reeves who also wrote the script with Mark Bomback, the film is the latest addition to the reboot film series that has raked in over $500 million globally.
The first two installments in the series, Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014), have achieved commercial success in China, with a total of CNY$900 million (or US$135 million) in box office as of February 2016.
Like its predecessor, War for the Planet of the Apes will continue to tell the story of survival in an imaginary world where humans and intelligent apes clash for control. The highly-anticipated new installment features Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson, and Steve Zahn.
