In the first quarter of 2018, the box office in China exceeded that of North America for the first time. In the first half of 2018, It stood at $4.77 billion, with local films accounting for a healthy 59.6% market share. China is expected to become the world’s largest film market within the next few years. The staggering growth of local films has been largely fueled by a new genre cinema that has emerged to meet the demands of a more open-minded audience. This panel will discuss the current state and trends of China’s genre cinema, what role the rapidly-changing censorship system is playing in its development, how neighboring countries are shaping it, and how Chinese cinema can gain global influence.

Aliza Ma is a New York-based programmer and writer specializing in Asian cinema. Currently, Aliza Ma is Head of Programming at New York’s Metrograph theater; before that she was Museum of the Moving Image’s assistant film curator.
Guan Yadi, Film Producer
Guan Yadi is at the forefront of a new genre cinema emerging in China. A former executive at PolyBona Film Distribution, Fantasy Pictures and Galloping Horse, he founded Life Pictures and Courage Media to kickstart medium-budget genre films.
Daniel Eagan, Film Critic
Daniel Eagan is a film historian and writer based in New York City. He is the author of America’s Film Legacy (Bloomsbury) and contributes to Film Journal, Film Comment, American Cinematographer, Filmmaker Magazine, and other outlets.
