Join the China Hollywood Society and China Film Insider for our Third jointly hosted online event: a web panel discussing with three top production companies currently working in the Chinese market.

We’ll discuss what these buyers are producing, what they’re looking for, and how they may be the perfect fit for your China project.

Our panelists will include Phabey Wang, GM of DreamEast PicturesAlex Jia, Vice President of WD Pictures, as well as Shan Dongbing, founder and President of Donwa Pictures.

Phabey Wang
GM, DreamEast Pictures

Born and raised in Beijing, China, Phabey started her career as a CE. She then became a screenwriter writing various sit-coms and TV series which were aired in mainland of China and Hong Kong.

To broaden her world-view and hone her craft, Phabey moved to Los Angeles and entered the prestigious Peter Stark Producing Program at USC School of Cinematic Arts. Because of her strong connections in the Chinese film community, and her ongoing immersion into the American film industry, Phabey’s goal is to become the most effective bridge-builder between Hollywood and Chinese film industry.

Phabey has been interviewed by CCTV (China) and New York Times on various topics. She has been giving an inside view of China entertainment censorship process and how US studios get their films made or released in China.

Phabey is a member of International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and serves for International Emmy Award as a Juror.

Alex Jia
Vice President, WD Pictures

Alex Jia is a script specialist and advisor. He studied English and American Literature as well as Comparative Literature in the United States. In 1998, he launched China Film Project at Harvard University, and in 2001 organised a touring Chinese film festival that involved such institutions as Harvard, NYU, the Lincoln Center and the National Gallery of Art, showcasing 11 Chinese films under the banner of the Urban Generation Films. Since his return to China in 2002 he has worked as a development executive for such companies as Chinavision (now Alibaba Pictures) and Shanghai New Culture Media Group. Now he is Vice President and Chief Creative Officer for Beijing WD Pictures, a film investment and production company specialised in co-productions. The films he has worked on as a creative producer or script advisor include RAILROAD TIGERS, SAVING MR. WU, ONE NIGHT STUD, POLICE STORY 2013, BELOVED, WHAT WOMEN WANT (a Chinese remake of the American film by the same title), LITTLE RED FLOWERS, ONE FOOT OFF THE GROUND and a documentary series A HISTORY OF PEKING OPERA.

Shan Dongbing
Founder/President, Donwa Pictures

Mr. Shan was the Executive President of Foye Pictures of Fosun Group in 2015. Before that, he was the Vice President of Business Development and Strategic Planning of Le Vision Pictures from 2011 to 2016 and Vice Present of financing and productions at Polybona Film Distribution Company from 2005 to 2007 as well as Senior Manager at China Film Import and Export Corporation from 1985 to 1999. Mr. Shan has been the consultant of News Corporations (China), 20th Century Fox, Asian Film Market of the Busan Film Festival, Digital Theater Systems (USA). He has also been an active independent film producer supporting the creative activities of the Sixth Generation filmmakers in China including Zhang Yuan and Yang Chao in their productions of SEVENTEEN YEARS and CROSSCURRENT.

Melanie Ansley

Melanie is the Executive Director of the China Hollywood Society, as well as a writer/producer.

Half Chinese and half Canadian, Melanie grew up in China and started her producing career in documentaries exploring Chinese social issues. In 2010 she produced Red Light Revolution, which became Tudou’s official Chinese New Year film in 2012. Melanie then completed her MFA in Producing at the University of Southern California’s Peter Stark program, where she co-wrote Don Quixote: The Ingenious Gentleman of La Mancha, starring Horatio Sanz and James Franco. In 2017 she produced King of Peking, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and is due for release in 2018. She is currently head writer on a TV series for a Chinese media platform.
