Shanghai Police Crackdowns on Fansub Piracy Group to Protect Intellectual Property Rights

Policy in Shanghai said on Wednesday that they have busted an alleged piracy group, “Renren Yingshi Subtitle Group”, which operates China’s largest subtitling site YYeTs.com. According to the police, the well-known video site has been engaged with providing unauthorized film and TV shows obtained from overseas pirate forums to Chinese viewers, generating illegal profits by collecting website membership and advertising fees. The news made headlines on social media site Weibo as the video site has garnered more than eight million registered members over the years. Although many netizens have expressed their griefs as they have enjoyed the vast high-quality resources provided by the platform, most of them agreed that it is important to tighten protection measures on intellectual property rights.
