Chinese Sci-Fi Industry Report 2020 Made Public at Sci-Fi Conference

The annual industry report on Chinese sci-fi industry was made public at the China Science Fiction Convention held in Beijing during the weekend. According to the report, the total box office generated from homemade sci-fi movies in 2019 has reached 7.14 billion yuan (about $1.06 billion), more than twice the number in 2018. Sci-fi movies’ total box office last year in the Chinese market, including Hollywood movies, was more than 19.5 billion yuan. Along with the rising attention paid to sci-fi movies, their related products also saw a larger market, the report said, noting that there were over 1,000 kinds of sci-fi related merchandise last year with an overall market value of 1.35 billion yuan. Read more China Science Writers Association

Chinese Film Market Raked in Over 100 Million Yuan Last Friday

Chinese film market saw another busy weekend with the release of Japanese animated film “Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution kizuna”, which grossed 19.05 million yuan on the first day of its release on Friday. The epic war film “The Sacrifice”, surpassed “Digimon” to continue its dominance in China’s daily box office, generating nearly 50 million yuan ($7.4 million) on Friday.  Since its release on Oct 23, the film has notched up a total of 568 million yuan box office so far.  Coming in third on Friday was local film “My People, My Homeland”, which raked in 10.8 million yuan on Friday, with its total box office revenue now topping 2.65 billion yuan.
