Andy Lau’s Crime Thriller ‘Shock Wave 2′ Leading China’s Box Office

The crime thriller “Shock Wave 2” is making a splash in China’s lackluster film market. The film has overtaken Eddie Peng’s “The Rescue” to top the country’s box office charts since Friday. Although said to be a sequel to Andy Lau’s 2017 film “Shock Wave,” the 2020 film is actually a brand-new tale which revolves around the story of a disabled bomb disposal expert’s effort to clear his name and also to stop a terrorist organization’s scheme. Since its release on Dec 24, the film has raked in more than 420 million yuan ($61.2 million), making it the highest grossing film in December. Read more China Daily

China Initiatess Antitrust Probe Into Jack Ma’s Alibaba Group

On December 24, the State Administration for Market Regulation initiated an antitrust probe into the Alibaba Group over its “choose one of the two” competitive policy. Alibaba confirmed the investigation in a statement issued on the same day. In it, it said that it will actively cooperate with the regulators, and the company’s business operations remain normal.
