2018 China Box Office Crosses RMB 40 B In 217 Days

2018 witnesses continual growth of the Chinese film market. According to online ticketing service provider Maoyan, China’s total box office earnings have reached RMB 40 billion ($5.84 billion) by August 5, almost one month earlier compared to the time when the 40-billion mark was hit last year. Moreover, three movies released in 2018 made over 3 billion yuan in ticket sales, while there are only five movies that ever made over 3 billion yuan in China. Today, consumption of cultural products has become an integral part of Chinese people’s daily life, and such phenomenon is extending from first and second tier cities to third and fourth tier cities. iQiyi and Super Sports Media to Form Joint Venture

On August 6, iQiyi (NASDAQ: IQ) and Super Sports Media announced that the two companies would form a joint venture named Beijing Xin’ai Sports Media Technology Co., Ltd. Upon the launch of the joint venture, Super Sports Media’s existing app will be upgraded and renamed as “iQiyi Sports.” The new app will provide extensive soccer, tennis and golf coverage through various broadcasting agreements made by iQiyi and Super Sports Media, including coverage of the English Premier League, the UEFA Nations League, the Australian Open, the ATP Tour and the WTA Tour. Han Han’s New Film Set To Release During 2019 Chinese New Year

Today, Chinese writer and director Han Han announced on Weibo that his new movie Fei Chi Ren Sheng had been set to release on February 5, the first day of 2019 Chinese New Year. In the post he wrote: “It has been a while since I started shooting my third movie Fei Chi Ren Sheng. Looking through the raw footage made me feel too excited to sleep at night. I wish this movie could be released tomorrow.” Han Han’s second movie Duckweed, which was released during the Chinese New Year holiday in 2017, was one of the highest grossing local films of the year, making one billion yuan in less than a month. Fei Chi Ren Sheng is an action comedy focusing on the adventure of a car racer who wants to get his career on track.
