Success Of “Wonder” And “Secret Superstar” Unveils Market Potential For Family-Friendly Movies in China

The success of two low-budget but highly successful films, Wonder and Secret Superstar is a good indicator that China is in need of films whose themes revolve around children. Domestic films produced in recent years have mostly been catering to adults, and one important reason for the lack of family-friendly films is the age gap between directors. There are the older, very experienced directors whose films tend to be didactic, and there are very young directors eager to prove themselves by telling sophisticated stories, with no one in between. Enlight Media Leads Entertainment And Media Stocks’ Surge

Beijing-based Enlight Media, along with other entertainment and media stocks, saw fast growth in their stocks for the first time in two years. The price of Shanghai New Culture has gone up by 6.6%, with Huayi Brothers and China Film following right behind with a 5.8% increase in their stocks. Enlight Media was the first to reach the daily price fluctuation limit (a cap on high-growth stocks in Chinese stock trading), posing the question of whether it was becoming a black horse in the film industry. Many analysts say that 2018 is likely going to be a better year for entertainment and media stocks than 2017, but some believe real growth will have to come from fundamental changes within the companies. For Huayi Brothers, much of the revenue comes from sources other than films, therefore the success of Youth and The Ex File 3: The Return of the Exes, brings little change to its shares. Meanwhile, Enlight Media has been having stable growth since 2011, and its movie ticketing service Maoyan’s Hong Kong IPO will also be an additional source of revenue for the company.
