Seven More Hollywood Sci-Fi Films Could Be Heading to China in 2017

Look for more Western science fiction at cinemas in China in 2017.

We’ve barely started the year and already there have been three Hollywood science fiction releases in the China market. First up was Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Passengers, and this weekend we see the unlikely arrival of, er, Arrival.

Here’s a tentative list of Hollywood sci-fi films that are trying to rocket their way into the rapidly expanding Chinese film market. Industry insiders and the local film press are all mentioning them as strong contenders.

The Space Between Us (世界之外)
February 3 in U.S. – China unconfirmed.

Scientists raise a young boy after he is unknowingly sent to Mars with them. When he returns from the red planet he not only has to deal with a budding romance but also the fact his body is not accustomed to Earth’s gravity.

Life (异星觉醒)
March 24 in U.S. – China unconfirmed.

Astronauts on the International Space Station find what might be the first proof of extraterrestrial life beyond Earth. Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds and Rebecca Ferguson deal with the fall-out of their discovery.

Power Rangers (超凡战队)
March 24 in U.S. – China unconfirmed.

A new set of five misfit high schoolers band together as the new Power Rangers in order to fight off the threat from an alien who is threatening their small hometown of Angel Grove.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (银河护卫队2)
May 5 in U.S. – China unconfirmed.

Chris Pratt and his team of superheroes return to protect the galaxy against all-new threats. Thankfully they’re also bringing another awesome soundtrack with them.

Alien: Covenant (异形:契约)
May 19 in U.S. – China unconfirmed.

A group of colonists try to defend themselves from strange alien life forms. Covenant follows 2012’s Prometheus, and is the second of three planned prequels to the Alien film series.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (星际特工:千星之城)
July 21 in U.S. – China unconfirmed.

Time-traveling agent Valérian and his partner Laureline are sent to investigate a galactic empire. As special government operatives of the human territories, the two are tasked with maintaining law and order in the universe.

Star Wars: Episode VIII (星球大战8)
December 15 in U.S. – China unconfirmed.

Little is known about what is in store for the galaxy in the next chapter of the Star Wars saga. It’s now in production and more plot details will be released later in the year.
