Leading Chinese auteur Jia Zhangke called for theater reopening once again on social media after the tragic news of Bona’s vice president’s suicide ripped through the Chinese film industry on Wednesday. In this post, Jia Zhangke revealed the bleak reality that almost one million workers in the film industry have been laid off since the enduring shutdown of movie theaters started in Spring Festival. The country’s top administrative body, the State Council, said in early May that all businesses including movie theaters could reopen in areas with low risks, but local authorities have yet to issue permission for cinemas to do so.
