China Box Office Hits $4.77 B in First Half of 2018 

According to data released by Ent Group, 2018 China box office has reached 31.6 billion yuan ($4.77 billion) as of June 29. Domestic films account for 59.6% of the total box office earnings. Chinese new year films Operation Red Sea and Detective Chinatown 2 top the charts with 3.65 billion yuan ($550 million) and 3.4 billion yuan ($510 million), respectively. 40 films managed to make over 100 million yuan in ticket sales, and 5 of them are animated films. As of June 27, China has 9911 movie theaters with 56,786 screenings. ‘Your Name’ Animation Studio Makes New Film for Netflix and China

Flavors of Youth, a Japan-China co-production of CoMix Wave and Haoliners Animation, will be released in China on August 4 via the National Alliance of Arthouse Cinemas. Globally, the film will be released on Netflix on the same day. CoMix is the producer of hit Japanese animated film Your Name, which gained huge commercial success in both Japan and China back in 2016. Stories in Flavors of Youth are told in three chapters, set in three different cities in China, and “explores the simple joys of life through sensual memories and how the beating heart of love cannot be defeated by the flow of time.” Read more on Mtime

Dwayne Johnson to Attend Premiere of ‘Skyscraper’ in Beijing on July 2

Upcoming American action film Skyscraper, which stars Dwayne Johnson, recently scored a rare China release in July during the country’s unofficial summer blackout. A China premiere has also been set to take place on July 2. In order to drum up anticipation for this upcoming film, Dwayne Johnson released a special video, in which he greeted Chinese fans, introduced highlights in the film, and also revealed that he would attend the premiere event in Beijing on July 2 along with several other cast members of the film.
